Welcome to Project Management Dean, a website for project managers in the design and construction industry. I’m Amy Dean, a project management professional (PMP) and professional engineer (PE). I am lucky enough to manage state owned capital projects and work with teams of architects and engineers to design and get projects built.
For most of my career, I have been on the other side of the table, so to speak, and the practices of the owner were a mystery to me. A few items that come to mind are: how they select a design team, what is their organizational structure, and why, for the love of all that is holy, can’t they make a decision quickly.
As a structural engineer, I was interested not only in structural design, of course, but also in the overall management of design and construction projects, which as you know is a role that the architect traditionally plays. Now that I work as a project manager for the state, I get to lead the team more like an architect does and it has been a learning experience.
In this blog I will write about what I’ve learned not only about what it is like being an owner, but also about what it is like to lead a team of architects and engineers and the project management skills needed to do both.
This is a personal blog and not affiliated with any university or college campus.
